When Ben was 15, he got beaten up pretty badly down a dark alley in his home town. He knew the boys that did it... they were from his school. He spent the next few months living in fear, hiding in school, staying away from any space that he might be vulnerable in. The stress and fear affected him so much that he became sick in his head and in his body. He dropped out of school for the rest of the year.
He appreciates fully the psychological and physiological impact of fear and how it can affect all parts of us, and he learned the important lesson of how we impact those around us. He promised himself that he would never let anyone feel like this, or impact anyone to such a state. He never faced up to the bully, but he found solace in changing his way of treating people; to treat them with kindness, love and patience. He learned to see the fear and/or anxiety in others and go to them, accept them for who they are, empathize with their feelings and bring out the best in them.
Each conversation he has today has been tinted with the painful memory of how one human can make another feel. This pain... he turns into power.
