Intro:
Welcome to the Ashes to Wings podcast, where we tell stories of overcomers, and give you tips and tricks to living a fuller, more embodied life, here's your host, Jenni O'Connor.
Jenni:
Hey friends! Welcome to Ashes to Wings. It’s summer here in the Chicago area. We joke that we really only have two seasons here... winter and construction. But we do get some beautiful summer nights that are nice enough to take a walk. My favorite place to walk is a small pond by our house. It’s filled with fireflies and frogs, so at nighttime we watch the fireflies dance and listen to the frogs and crickets sing. It’s a beautiful symphony of nature.
So this week’s tip is on mindfulness walks. You don’t have to walk at night... any time of day is fine. And it doesn’t have to be any particular length... you can even do this in a small yard. If possible, I recommend taking a path that’s familiar to you, so you can see just what a difference this makes.
As you walk, take time to notice all of the beautiful elements that are reaching your senses. What are the sights... the smells... the sounds... the textures? Do you see insects or birds flying, or trees moving? Do you smell flowers or freshly-cut grass? Do you hear the laughter of children, or the hoot of an owl? Is there a cool breeze ruffling your hair, or warm sun on your skin?
If you have time, try pausing to examine a tiny detail more closely. Something you may have entirely missed on a faster walk. Count the spots on a ladybug, or marvel at the iridescent shades of color on a flower. See how soft a dandelion weed is before you make a wish and blow the seeds, watching them float on the breeze.
Spend a few minutes in mindfulness, and see what you noticed that you never have before. Make sure you let me know how it went! See you next time!
